Windsor Castle 温莎堡

Windsor Castle is a royal residence at Windsor, on the outskirts of London. Windsor Castle is the largest continuously inhabited castle in the world. Members of the British Royal Family, including the present Queen have lived in Windsor for over 900 years. Windsor Castle has been the home of 39 monarchs in this period.

Windsor Castle was first built in 1066, by William the Conqueror. Windsor castle was chosen for a good reason, the point which the castle was built is a strategic position on a steep hill overlooking the River Thames.

The original castle was built from wood with earth fortifications.

How to get to Windsor Castle from London

It's fairly easy to get to Windsor from London, most people take a train from London Waterloo Station or from London Paddington Station. Trains from Waterloo Station to Windsor run every 30 minutes and takes around 20 mins, the train is direct to Windsor Riverside Station. This would be the best route for those of you who don't like changing trains and waiting around.

The other route is via London Paddington to Windsor Central Train via Slough, this route involves a stop at Slough, the Journey time can be around 30 - 45 mins depending on the train you catch. Tickets can cost around £9.90 per person if booked individually (rates as of October 2013) however group discounts are available for groups for 3-8 people, the amount of discount for 4 people is greater than that for 3, but it is the same for a group of 8. In a group of 8 the cost per person would be around £5. What to see in Windsor, Great Park, and Windsor Castle

温莎堡是大約 900 年前威廉王興建的城堡。
當時是打算利用東邊的倫敦塔、西邊的溫莎堡來監視，預防敵人入侵倫敦。
當初是將中央部份壟高，採土堆形式的城塞。也是當時唯一的木造城堡。爾後亨利二世將其改建為石造塔，也就是今日我們看見的風貌。
溫莎堡於 1992 年慘遭祝融侵襲，城堡幾乎全毀，也因此 1993 年白金漢宮對外開放就是為了籌措溫莎堡的重建經費，讓我們現在還能親眼目睹溫莎堡昔日的風光。

The Guildhall - Windsor's Guildhall was designed by Sir Thomas Fitch and completed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1689, Christopher Wren was the architect of St Paul's Cathedral in London. It is best known for where Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles got married in 2005, it is also where Sir Elton John and David Furnish celebrated their civil partnership. Market Cross House also known as the The Crooked House, was built in 1687 and is now a tea room. It is located within close proximity to the statue of Queen Victoria. The house began to tilt in the early 1700, the reason was it was built with unseasoned wood.

The UK's Shortest Street - Charlotte Street, is officially the shortest street in Britain, it is located near the Guildhall, the street is a mere 16 meters in length

Church Street is located opposite the castle exit, is cobbled and is full of ancient houses

Nell Gwynne's House, located Midway down Church Street is also very popular as it was the house where Nell Gwynne lived, she was the mistress of King Charles of England. It is said that she haunts the house, still waiting for the King to return. King Charles was executed in the 1600 by Oliver Cromwell and the Parliamentarians, and Great Britain was declared a republic at the end of the English civil war. Charles was buried in St Georges chapel inside Windsor castle.

The UK's only blue pillar box, blue post boxes were introduced to important sites in England, between 1930 and 1938 to receive air mail. It is situated at the junction of High Street and St Albans Street.The mail box was erected to commemorate the first air mail flight, which took place between Windsor and London.The flight was organised to carry special mail celebrating the coronation of King George V. As such the mailbox still carries the insignia of King George V.

The State Apartments inside Windsor Castle are furnished with some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection. They include paintings by famous artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto.

Changing of The Guard takes place at 11am daily in summer and every other day rest of the year, with the exception of Sundays. The guards march along the High Street and then turn right to march up Castle Hill before marching into the castle to take the place of the soldiers on duty.
